Well, first and foremost, credit must be given
to www.bigwaste.com and www.bttf.com without these wonderful write ups of
the filming locations whereabouts, I would not have been able to have this
amazing BTTF for real encounter. The following is a trip can be
done in a day, taking into account the Southern L.A. traffic and all (I
thought traffic here in Toronto was bad, then the LA traffic veered its ugly
head) anyhow, the tour that I took included, in order,
GET DRESSED IN YOUR MARTY
GEAR, PACK UP YOUR DeLOREAN AND LETS GO!

Whittier Union High
school (Hill Valley High)
The way I will lay out the webpage will be as if you are starting from
Whittier High. The easiest way to get to Whittier is to take Interstate
605 to Whittier BLVD East. You continue on Whittier Blvd EAST to Hadley
Street, turn EAST on Hadley, and continue along Hadley Street and you will
see the High school. When we got to the high school summer classes were in
session. I figure, great, maybe I can get a chance to "roam" around.
Seconds after I stepped foot onto the High school yard, security approached
me and asked me what I was doing. I thought for sure I would get laughed
off the property when I told them I was here because of BTTF, but to my
surprise the security officer told me, "Oh yeah! I was a student here when
they were filming." He proceeded to tell me that over there is the
cafeteria, over there is the courtyard where the cars were parked, and that
way was where they filmed Marty coming out the rear doors to the "roof
access" stairs. The only stipulation was that I was not to disturb any of
the classes. No problem! I don't think I would want to disturb any of
the students here, it seemed to be in a "rougher" part of town, so they may
kick your butt if you piss them off. It was kind of cool walking across
the front lawn, through the front doors of the high school and down the
halls. Stop on the right to have a sip of water from the fountain Doc
drank from, take a quick peek in the classroom where Mary caught his mom
cheating, then proceed to the cafeteria.
The
caf was a little dingy, dark and deserted, but nevertheless, snap a few pics
and proceed to the rear courtyard. Not much in the school was too
different, it was very easy to distinguish the scenes from the movie. The
rear courtyard had a few minor alterations, but you still can get a nice
snapshot of yourself standing where Lorraine put the moves on Marty.
I then left the rear courtyard and headed past the steps where Marty
attempts to grab the Almanac from Biff (which are now fenced off)
and
headed to the back of the school, past the swimming pool, to the double
doors next to the "roof access" steps. The funny thing is that the roof
access steps really only lead up to a second story level, but with a little
movie magic and camera angles, we believe its the roof!

Puente Hills Mall (Twin Pines
Mall)
Now we will leave the high school and head back to the 605 Freeway and head
NORTH to California Route 60, the Pomona Freeway. You will be taking Route
60 EAST and exiting at AZUSA BLVD. Head SOUTH on AZUSA BLVD, and you can
see the mall from road. We parked the car in the same stall as Doc had the
truck, and snapped a couple of quick shots from a road above overlooking the
parking lot,
right
below the TGIF Restaurant. Not really all that much to look at here,
except that its the place where the DeLorean was unveiled and proceeded to
race around in the coolest scene the first movie. The mall inside is kind
of cool to look around, but as for BTTF, the parking lot is the same, the
mall exterior is slightly different (JC Pennies is gone, and replaced with a
gym), but still very cool to see, and very recognizable. Quick word or
caution, if you decide to take a quick little "drive" around the parking
lot, don't do it in the middle of the day like I did, Security came on the
double and were not pleased.
They
just did not seem to understand that the DeLorean was driving here, and that
if you drive all the way here you are tempted to "boot" around in the empty
parking lot. ANYHOW! Lets proceed to Docs Mansion.
|
|
Gamble Mansion
(Docs
Mansion)
We have to get back on to the 605 NORTH, and head up to the 210 WEST. If
you want you can actually take AZUSA NORTH all the way up to the 210, but
either way works. My apologies ahead of time, but I cannot remember the
cutoff on the 210 to take for the Gamble House, but if you take Arroyo Pkwy
and head north, you will be right in the middle of Pasadena. We stopped
and asked at a gas station for the quickest way to the Gamble Mansion and we
were off. Tours of the house are given on the weekend and Thursdays, but
none of the interior was used in BTTF, just exterior shots of the house were
used.
At the mansion you can actually walk right down the path Marty took to get
to Docs front door and snap a picture. The garage, is there as well, no
DeLorean in it, but instead, a bunch of books, overpriced trinkets and a old
lady... its a gift shop.
But its there and you can take a picture outside of it. Next stop, George,
Lorraine and Biff's house.
|
|
Bushnell Ave (1955 Houses)
Take any major road from Pasadena and head south. We took Fair Oaks avenue
and headed south. From Fair Oaks Avenue, you proceed south to over the
110 to Oake Avenue and take a right (EAST) Go east a few blocks and you
will see Bushnell Avenue on your right hand side. The first house you will
see is Georges, #1711,
on
the right hand side of the street. It looks the same as it did in the
movie. 3 houses down on the same side is Lorraines house, #1727,
it
looks the same from the movie as well, except for the crap on the roof and a
untrimmed tree blocking a view to Lorraines room (damn). Don't forget to
look across the street from Lorraines to find the tree that George was "bird
watching"
in.
3 doors down from Lorraines house again on the right hand side is the house
that Biff threw the kids ball into the roof design, a local homeowner told
us that they had just filmed
Old
School with Wil Farrel (its the Frat house from the movie). Another couple
doors down, on the same side, is Biffs house (the bushes that old Biff
crashes the car into are still there, easy to spot) of course all those
lovely lawn ornaments are gone, but the house is recognizable, its #1809.
Get back to Fair Oaks and head north to Huntington, I BELIEVE it will take
you to San Fernando Rd, you take San Fernando Rd north to Los Feliz blvd.
|
|
Greek Theatre (Start Line /
Tunnel)
When you get to Los Feliz Blvd, turn left off of San Fernando Rd, and head
West on Los Feliz until you get to Vermont Ave. Turn right off of Los
Feliz Blvd, onto Vermont Ave (north) and proceed towards the Greek Theatre.
You will have to watch the trees on your right hand side of the road (across
from the Greek Theatre) and there you will find, the Lamppost, Bench and
tree where the Start Line was painted.
Funny how Hollywood works, the start line was here and the clock tower is
about 15 mins behind it in the Universal Back lot... After your done at the
start line, continue to head north up Vermont Ave and you will go around
some bends and up a hill, well, at the top of this hill is none other than
the BTTF 2 Hoverboard tunnel.
Both the tree and tunnel are recognizable, you may need to check the picture
to match the tree up , its pretty much directly in front and across the
street from the main entrance of the Greek Theatre, but the tunnel is
unmistakable, its the only one in the area! When we were there the first
time, the road up to the tunnel was closed (it closes at dusk for some
reason) but as long as your there during the day you should be fine. Now
lets head over to Hollywood and check out the church for the Enchantment
under the sea dance.
|
|
Hollywood United Methodist Church
(Enchantment Under the Sea Dance)
This church is right downtown Hollywood, so you get to check out some of the
freaks walking on Hollywood Blvd, we saw a homeless dude wearing his
underwear outside of his pants! Crazy stuff, anyhow, Get back onto Los
Feliz , head south / west and it will take you right to Hollywood Blvd.
When you get to Hollywood blvd, take a right (west) and proceed until you
get to Highland, take a right, and you will see the church. It has a big
red AIDS ribbon on it, hard to miss.
The dance gym is located in the back of the church property. Other movies
filmed here were Sister Act, That Thing You Do and more recently Anger
Management. nobody was around so I did my best impersonation of Marty on
stage playing Johnny B Good with my trusty Air Guitar,
and
made sure to check out the back stage area for the steps and doorway which
"magically" lead out to Whittier High.
We
can now head to Universal, to check out the clock tower and DeLorean star
car, but its up to you, we did Universal as a separate day, but you can
always just go for the BTTF stuff. To get to universal from Hollywood
blvd, head NORTH on Highland Blvd. Universal is Dead ahead.

|
Universal Studios
(DeLorean, Biffs 1955 Car, Various Props / 2015 Cars)
$47 US per person will give you a day of fun at the park. Included in this
price is a tram ride tour of the back lot. Unfortunately the day we went,
the Hill Valley courthouse was not included on the tour as they were filming
the Cat in the Hat there. Watch out for a few of the BTTF 2 cars parked
behind the BTTF ride, you pass by it right as the tram ride begins. We saw
the Goldie Wilsons Hoverconverted pink Cadillac and one of the many
futuristic Ford Probes from 2015. Pay attention on the tour after you go
over some crappy bridge. You will see the Lyons Estates signs. You drive
by them pretty quick, but that's them... it looks like the lettering was
changed from the movie... ah well.
We should have gone down the main street after this to see the town square,
but again since the Cat in the Hat was filming we did not. We still got a
great shot of the Clock Tower from a overlook, but it would have been nice
to get up close, ah well, have come back again!
After the tram tour, BTTF the ride is just around the corner, BUT our luck
was not with us again, and the DeLorean was not on display ! Usually the
DeLorean and Biffs Car are on display, but of course when I go, they are
not. Quite upset at this point, I decided that I would try my luck and
see if I could "sweet talk" somebody to take me behind the scenes to see
what I came for ..... after a little bit of talking to the right people, I
got my way :)
TOTALLY
amazing that they have all this stuff all over the place. From the head
office of the theme park, we started our walk to find the DeLorean. Lot
#1, full of cars from 2 Fast 2 Furious, Magnum P.I.s Ferrari,
and
other various cars from Universal movies. I noticed an older car covered
up, "Hey, is that Biffs car" I quickly asked and headed over towards it.
Indeed it was!
I
snapped a few quick pics and continued to find the DeLorean. Around the
corner from Biff's car, we found a DeLorean, not a BTTF DeLorean, but rather
just a ROTTEN DeLorean, sad really.
We left the first lot and headed to underneath the BTTF ride. I got a up
close and personal look at the Goldie Wilson Cadillac
and
the Probe,
but
still no DeLorean to be found. Happy that I got to see what I saw, we
started to head back to the front gate. On our way back, he quickly
remembered one more spot that the DeLorean MAY be. Sure enough, we turned
the corner and there was a low car covered up with a strange looking car
cover .... the car cover actually has a special pocket for Mr. Fusion. We
quickly uncovered her and unleashed her sheer glory! Ah ... finally we
found it ... the hero car from part 1. I tried the handle for good luck,
yeah right... you should know my luck by now, but FINALLY my luck took a
turn for the better! The theme parks actor who plays Doc Brown came around
the corner at that instant! "Hey Doc, you go the keys for this bad boy?"
he replies with "gimme a second" he comes back, and OPENED HER UP! I calmed
myself from a massive heart attack as Doc started up the D and then let me
snap a couple pics and have a seat and play around ... time circuits on,
flux capacitor fluxing, engine running... all right!
Quite an amazing experience, but don't expect to do this when you go, I was
EXTREMELY lucky to find such super friendly and helpful staff willing to
help me out! Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I told them I
traveled all the way from Toronto, Ontario to do this, that they felt bad
for me! Who knows, nevertheless it was AMAZING!

Now after
a long day of BTTF sight seeing, you must be starving, right? Well lets grab
a bite to eat at Burger King, not just any Burger King, but the one where
Docs house is in 1985. |
|
Burger King (Docs 1985
Residence)
From Universal Studios, get onto the Interstate 5, and head north (west) and
you will head upstate towards Burbank California. Cutoff on Victory BLVD
and head north. You will see the burger king on Victory BLVD between
Magnolia and Burbank BLVD. Its the only BK in a 5 mile radius.
Unfortunately this BK has had a facelift and no longer sports the old BK
signs, but rather the new flashy signs, aside from that, the sidewalk and
bushes are still the same from the movie.
Eat up, cause its off to the rec centre next!
|
|
McCambridge Park Recreation Center (Battle of the Bands)
The rec centre is the same as it was in the movie minus the mural in the
background. There were a few screaming kids running around when I was
there, but that did not stop me! I got a couple pics up on the stage area,
and
looked out to see what Marty faced during the auditions, minus the screaming
kids! I noticed that along the sidewalls of the gym, there were some
folding metal chairs! What a perfect opportunity for pictures if these
chairs were simply moved to the proper locations.
Last but certainly not least, its time to head home.... Marty's home!
|
|
9303 Roslyndale (Marty's House)
Located in Arleta, California is the McFly residence. AKA 9303
Roslyndale. The house still looks IDENTICAL to the way it did in the
movie, aside from a white mustang in the driveway and a basketball net.
The power lines in the backyard were something that was actually sought out
for the movie, a post modern power / future / nuclear kind of sorta image
was trying to be achieved. I read in one of the other tours that they
actually setup spot lights in the back of the house to illuminate the power
lines. It was also on this street that you see the DeLorean fly towards
the camera at the end of part 1 / beginning of part 2. The trees still
look the same, its great! WATCH OUT FOR FLYING DeLOREANS!

|
|
I wish I
had some more time to check out the other locations, like Hilldale, the
Peabody farm, the road in chino that Marty drives out onto from the Peabody
farm. Perhaps next time. It was still a great tour to take. TONNES of
fun, and remember to be on the lookout for famous people ..... you never
know who you may bump into in tinsel town!
